Bricklayers in Chalfont, Maidenhead and the Surrounding Areas |
The Three Main Types of Brick

A building material steeped in history, the humble brick has played a part in the construction of some of the most important buildings in the Western world, and beyond. At D. Mitchell Brickwork, our bricklayers are proud to honour the long tradition of manual bricklaying by upholding the highest standards of workmanship. Fired from clay, bricks have existed for millennia and are still one of the most reliable materials for general construction work, such as property extensions in Maidenhead.

Active across Chalfont and the surrounding areas, we use several different types of bricks for our commercial and domestic brickwork projects, depending on the budget, the aesthetics and which part of the structure we are working on.

Please visit our company blog to find more articles that expand upon the specialist brickwork we do. Here are the three main types of bricks used in the UK:

Facing Brick

The most commonly used brick for domestic brickwork, facing bricks are aesthetically uniform, making them ideal for façades. Strong, high quality and weather resistant, our bricklayers often use them for external walls.

Facing bricks come in two varieties:

Strong and lightweight, wirecut bricks can be manufactured in large quantities and have core holes running through their centres. Soft mud bricks have a more authentic look and have an indentation rather than holes, making them a popular choice in Maidenhead, Chalfont and the surrounding areas.

Engineering Brick

Rarely used for domestic constructions, engineering brick is exceptionally strong and is utilised for civil engineering and similar projects. With high compressive strength, engineering bricks are resistant to frost and water, making them ideal for external structures.

Less aesthetically pleasing than facing bricks, engineering bricks are used for sewers, manholes and other infrastructure projects that require specialist brickwork.

Available in blue and red shades, they come in Class A and Class B varieties, Class A being the strongest. A tough and dependable material, our bricklayers occasionally use engineering bricks for commercial bricklaying projects in the Chalfont and Maidenhead areas.

Common Brick

Ironically, common bricks are the rarest type of brick used in the UK. The ‘common’ part of the name refers to the general quality of the material, which tends to be lower than other alternatives.

With less compressive strength and a rough-hewn look, common bricks cannot be used for load-bearing or below-ground structures; they are reserved for internal work.
